James Ross Hunter Youth Support CIC Changing Lives through 'Sydenham Community' NCIL FUNDED 'Sip n TalK' Project 2025-2026

ABOUT SAFE (FUNDED BY NCIL - Sip n Talk Project 2025-2026)

‘Safe’ is a play created for youth aged 10+ to educate children about the dangers of gang culture and knife crime.  Using forum theatre techniques, ‘Safe’ invites the audience to suggest how the lead Jacob could have made different choices and changed his fate.  Individuals are invited to actively participate in the story.

A hard-hitting, original drama written by young people, under the guidance of professional mentors. Featuring young performers, SAFE challenges expectations about London’s youths, offers hope for the future, and conveys a positive message about staying safe in an increasingly dangerous society, while exploring gang culture and knife crime from a young perspective. Some themes explored in ‘SAFE’ relevant to the National Curriculum include Anti-violence, Diversity Education and Critical Thinking. The project was managed, facilitated and directed by Collet Hunter (Managing Director, James Ross Hunter Youth Support).

‘SAFE’ brings forum delivery to all ages.  Themes explored from the national curriculum: Anti-violence, Relationship Education, Drug Education,

Critical Thinking, Gang Prevention, and Diversity Education.

Today's session was another insight into our precious children's thoughts and expectations of care on ongoing safety and public health awareness.

Key Messages:

  1. You have more power than you think - to protect yourself, to make smart choices, to walk away from danger.

  2. Knowledge is your best defence - now you know the risks, the tactics, and the consequences.

  3. It can happen to anyone - don't think you're immune. Stay aware, stay safe.

  4. No possession is worth your safety - not your phone, not your pride, nothing.

  5. Carrying a knife makes you LESS safe - not more. That's not opinion, that's fact.

  6. Every choice has consequences - the ones you make today shape the rest of your life.

  7. You're not alone - if you're in danger, being exploited, or feeling pressured, some people can help.
