Lesson 2: Emotional Awareness and Regulation We’ll dive deeper into the psychological theories behind happiness and explore some groundbreaking research that will give you more insight into how happiness works and can be measured.

As we go through this lesson, you’ll discover that happiness isn’t just about feeling good—it’s a key aspect of your mental and physical well-being, and it's tied to your life satisfaction, success, and even your health.

Let's start with the basics. We all know what happiness feels like.—a moment of joy, contentment, or excitement. But when we dig deeper, happiness is a complex, multi-faceted experience. It’s often described in two ways:

  • Hedonic Happiness: This is the kind of happiness that comes from pleasure and enjoyment, like indulging in your favourite meal, relaxing in nature, or enjoying time with loved ones. It’s often short-term and tied to sensory experiences.

  • Eudaimonic Happiness: This is a deeper, more enduring sense of happiness. It’s about living in alignment with your values, fulfilling your potential, and experiencing a sense of purpose. Think of it as long-term satisfaction that stems from meaningful experiences.

Now that we have a better idea of what happiness is.  Let’s talk about why it’s so important. It’s not just a feel-good concept—it plays a crucial role in every part of our lives.

Here’s why happiness matters:

  • Mental Health: Happiness is linked to lower levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. When you experience positive emotions regularly.  It strengthens your mental resilience and helps you cope with life’s challenges.

  • Physical Health: Studies show that happier people tend to have better immune function, lower blood pressure, and even longer lifespans! Happiness triggers the release of endorphins, which help reduce stress and promote overall physical well-being.

  • Life Satisfaction: Happiness influences your overall sense of life satisfaction. The more you experience happiness, the more likely you will feel fulfilled and content with your life. It affects how you view your work, relationships, and your self-worth.

  • Better Relationships: Happy people tend to build stronger and more meaningful relationships. Positive emotions are contagious, and when you radiate happiness, others are more likely to feel good around you, creating a cycle of positivity.

It’s important to distinguish between pleasure and true happiness. Often, people think that happiness is the same as pleasure, but the two are different:

  • Pleasure is typically short-lived and linked to external rewards (like eating a favourite food, shopping, or receiving a compliment).

  • Happiness, on the other hand.  Is broader and can be sustained even when life isn’t perfect. It's about finding meaning, connection, and fulfilment in life.

The difference is crucial because pleasure is wonderful, it doesn’t bring long-lasting happiness. For example, you may enjoy a sweet treat at the moment.  In the long run, the true key to happiness lies in more sustainable factors like having strong relationships, pursuing meaningful work, and managing stress effectively.

To make this more relatable, think about your journey for a moment. When you’re happy, how do you feel? How does happiness affect your energy levels, relationships, and outlook on your life?

Now, imagine you’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or disconnected. You may notice that your mood impacts how you interact with others, handle challenges, and even your ability to stay productive or enjoy daily activities.

But here’s the good news: Happiness is something you can cultivate. It’s not just about waiting for the “perfect moment” or hoping that circumstances will change. By adopting specific strategies and mindsets, you can increase your happiness and emotional well-being.

  1. Happiness is multi-dimensional: It includes hedonic (pleasure-based) and eudaimonic (purpose-driven) elements.

  2. Happiness impacts your mental, physical, and relational health: It plays a crucial role. Reducing stress, improving health, and boosting life satisfaction.

  3. Happiness can be cultivated: Through mindset shifts, emotional awareness, and healthy habits, you can create more lasting happiness in your life.

  • Reflect on Your Happiness: Take a few minutes to think about your sources of happiness. What moments or activities make you feel pleased? How often do you experience these kinds of moments? Write your thoughts in your journal, and consider how you could invite more of these experiences into your life.

And with that, you're off to a fantastic start!
